At this luncheon, we will be hearing from our very own Rotary District 5190 Governor Doug McDonald from the Rotary Club of Penn Valley. We welcome him and his wife Karen and look forward to his visit, during which, he will make awards presentations to three of our members. We should also all come away from Doug's presentation prouder than ever to be Rotarians, while our guests will gain a greater understanding of why we are Rotarians and the value of the work of Rotary.
Doug was raised in Petaluma, CA and earned a BA at Stanford University and MBA at the University of Santa Clara. He spent the majority of his professional career as a professional staff member with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a member of the National staff, as well as Executive Director in Stockton, San Jose and Sacramento and ending his career as the Chief Operating Officer for the local Scout Council serving San Bernardino and Riverside Counties headquartered in Redlands. His duties included volunteer recruiting and management, board development, fundraising, membership development, program delivery, and staff management.
He has been a member of Rotary in communities where he was assigned to serve with Scouting, including Pacifica, Menlo Park, Los Altos, Burlingame, Stockton, San Jose and Sacramento. He joined has first Rotary club in 1972 and has been active in Rotary for most of the time since then. His family has been involved in Rotary for many years, and his father and two brothers are all past club presidents. His first introduction to Rotary was as a Scout when his Rotary-sponsored troop visited the Rotary Club of Petaluma annually to provide a program during Scout Month.
He has held many club offices such as newsletter editor, sergeant-at-arms, treasurer, and administration chair. He was president of the Penn Valley club in 2010-11. He was a founding officer of the Penn Valley Rotary Foundation. He is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, Paul Harris Society Member, and Benefactor Member and has served the district as an assistant governor and trainer.
Doug has been active in his community as a Sheriff's volunteer, board member for Habitat for Humanity and Western Sierra Medical Clinic, and with his church. He continues to be an active Scouting volunteer on a Regional level.
His wife, Karen, is 2016-17 co-president of Penn Valley Rotary. She is a retired Catholic school educator and currently an adjunct professor for the University of San Francisco School of Education. They have lived in Lake Wildwood community for the last seven years. Their daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter live near Riverton, Wyoming, where he is president-elect of his Rotary Club. Their son and daughter-in-law live in San Francisco. All are Paul Harris Fellows.
