Darren McBride, CEO - Sierra Computer Group and McBride Machine

Darren is CEO of both Sierra Computer Group and McBride Machine. Sierra Computer Group is N. NV's oldest computer and IT sales and support firm. McBride Machine was founded in 1970 and is a metal shop that repairs heavy industrial equipment and fabricates metal parts of all types. Darren has an electrical engineering degree from UNR and was the long time host of the Radio program "Computer Bytes" on 780 KOH in Reno. He helped found the "Entrepreneur's Organization" in Reno in 2001 and is still an active member in that group. It was through EO that Darren first attended a 1 day bus tour of burning man in 2012. Along with a fellow EO member from Cincinnati Ohio, Darren vowed to return for the whole burning man experience in 2013 and subsequently helped found a "theme camp" called dEOxzidozed at burning man. The name was a play on words to represent entrepreneurs who want to "kick the rust off" and get outside their comfort zone. In 2017 he helped create the popular art car "The Mirroracle" and bring it to the Playa. As a local resident and business owner, Darren will discuss the Burning Man history, culture, art, music and the "Pros" and "Cons" of the Burning Man experience. |

The Platinum Hostel- a student hostel project- Ghana

Thank you to Dr. Karin Hilgersom, President, TMCC, for recommending Dr. Poku. Kofi Poku, PhD, is a professor at TMCC in the Business Department. Kofi received the Faculty Advisor of the Year Award in 2021 for his amazing leadership of his Business and Entrepreneurship Club. Prior to joining TMCC, Kofi worked as corporate internal auditor for Eastman Kodak which took him all over the world, and served as a consultant to the World Bank, assisting developing countries to strengthen entrepreneurship education and training programs. Dr. Poku has been funding a housing project - The Platinum Hostel, for students in Ghana, his original home. With over 50% of the youth unemployed in Ghana, Kofi has championed the building of this affordable high-quality hostel facility for students of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, his alma mater, and leading university in Ghana and Africa. Kofi will speak to us about development of The Platinum Hostel, and the opportunity it's affording young students so they may follow their dreams in pursuing higher education to become more productive citizens of society. |

In 2001, Jeff Gabriel joined the Rotary Club of Topeka South in Rotary District 5710. In 2017, he transferred to the Rotary Club of Bishop Sunrise. At the club level he has served as 2nd Vice President, 1st Vice President, and President. At the District level Jeff has served on the Audit Committee, Rotary Youth Exchange Committee, Assistant Governor representative for the Avenues of Service Committee, and more. He is also a Paul Harris Fellow +2 and a member of the Paul Harris Society. We are honored to have Jeff join us this week. He will cover his theme for the year, Together We Are One, and his vision for the District. |

Angel Flight West is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization that arranges free, non-emergency air transportation within the 12 Western states for children and adults with serious medical conditions and other compelling needs. Michael, "Hutch" Hutchinson is a single engine and sea plane pilot for over 37 years. He has been with AFW since moving to Nevada. Hutch coordinates medical providers, physicians and hospitals for Angel Flight West. Hutch will be joined by Barbara Ausherman, Angel Flight West Wing Commander for the State of Nevada. Barbara is a twin and instrument rated pilot, and has been with AFW for years on numerous missions. "When someone's transportation needs are critical, organizations know they can depend on us. There is never a cost to the patient or the health care provider/organization. We are part of their interdisciplinary care plan." Since 1983, AFW has completed 20,184 flights, transported 95,809 patients/families. This year, 2022, flights have carried over 4,016 passengers. Barbara and Hutch will speak to us how Angel Flight West matches volunteer pilots to people in need, enabling them to receive medical treatment and other essential services that might otherwise be inaccessible because of financial, medical, or geographic circumstances. |

Ryan Doetch is the Principal at Lloyd Diedrichsen Elementary, the 2013 Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Mathematics, the 2012 PBIS National Innovative Teacher of the Year, Author/Consultant of 14 books for the Bureau of Education and Research, and an educator for over 26 years. Ryan is known around the world as an exemplary teacher of elementary students. In his free time, Ryan trains teachers, interventionists, curriculum specialists, and administrators from around the world on the best, practical ideas for making instruction successful for all learners. Ryan will be speaking to us about his work in refeshing Diedrichsen and his journey in improving education. |

NEWS FLASH! Hidden Valley Country Club will be remodelling their banquet room in January, so we will temporarily move to the Reno Elks Lodge for the month. The Reno Elks Lodge is located at 597 Kumle Lane, Reno 89509. Kumle Lane is off Virginia Street, across from the Reno/Sparks Convention Center and behind Les Schwab Tires. Since 2010 Kyle has been teaching natural building - adobe, cob and straw bale - across the U.S. and in Mexico. Last summer Kyle was contacted by a woman from Kenya who is interested in learning the techniques in hope that they will influence local building practices. On February 18, Kyle and a co-teacher will travel to her village in Kenya for five weeks to lead a build of a complete cabin from the foundation to the roof. This service trip is being conducted through their 501c3 nonprofit "Be the Change Project". Kyle will speak to us about the natural building materials, techniques, advantages, and the Kenyan project. |

Young Charles and Jennifer CHIA were abducted on October 18, 1989 on their way home from school. Nine months later, on July 25, 1990, their remains were found in a shallow grave 8 miles west of Portola California. The Reno Police Department has allowed Allan to continue to work the case in retirement. Allan will explain the core of the investigation, and lab work needed for evidence discovered, to bring the case to closure. |
